Turns out Illinois, the Land of Lincoln, is also the land of romance, with many venues perfect for the eloping honeymooners, small destination weddings, as well as large weddings. Below we highlight some of the cities in Illinois you might want to consider, as well as some choice locations for ceremonies, receptions or honeymoons.

Chicago:

We have a special page on Chicago Weddings, so be sure to click on Chicago Weddings. Below are also the "Best Hotels for Romantic Getaways in Chicago, Illinois," according to the Mobile Travel Guide:

• The Ritz-Carlton, A Four Seasons Hotel
• Four Seasons Hotel Chicago
• The Peninsula Chicago
• Park Hyatt Chicago
• The Drake Hotel Chicago

Galena:

Galena, located in the far northeast corner of Illinois, is one of the the state's most popular tourist destinations, known for it's history (home to Ulysses S. Grant), as well as its numerous ski and golf resorts, as well as quaint hotels and Bed and Breakfasts. And, more importantly, we think it's probably one of the best places to get married in Illinois. With so many fine places for ceremonies and honeymoons, it's hard to pick favorites, but, here goes:

DeSoto House

Celebrate your own historical event at one of Galena's most historic hotels, the DeSoto House Hotel, which is referred to as "Illinois' Oldest Operating Hotel." The DeSoto House has been hosting weddings since 1855, and can accommodate weddings and elopements from 2 to 25 in intimate rooms, or, up to 120 people in their Ballroom.

The DeSoto House Hotel has entertained such guests as Abraham Lincoln and William Jennings Bryan, and served as the presidential campaign headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant. It's not often you have the opportunity to get married in a place with such historical significance. You can call the DeSoto House at 800-343-6562 for more information.

Galena Wedding Chapel at Bernadine's Stillman Inn

Another historic wedding venue in Galena is the Galena Wedding Chapel, built in 1858. The chapel seats 24 and has standing room for 15 more. They also offer an overflow standing area which can accommodate 60 people.

The Galena Wedding Chapel offers mahogany pews, vaulted wood ceilings and historic wood floors. The outdoor garden is also available for weddings during the day, as well as during the night for those of you who wish a moonlit wedding ceremony.

For the eloping couple, the Galena Wedding Chapel offers a special "Secret Elopement Package" for $525 for just the two of you. The price includes the Officiate, Chapel Hostess, Wedding Chapel with seasonal decorations or garden site, CD music, and two witnesses. For an extra $225 you'll receive the Bride's bouquet, Groom's boutonniere, unity candles, champagne with two etched glasses, 8" wedding cake and 2x6 wedding prints.

For more information, you can call them at 866-777-0557 or email them at info@galenaweddingchapel.com

Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa

Though not historic, the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa is certainly a great place for a wedding or honeymoon, especially if one or more of you are into golf. Eagle Ridge boasts 63 holes of championship golf, and was recognized by Golfweek as having one of the "Best Resort Courses in America." Add to that the tented Point Patio which overlooks Lake Galena, their Grand Ballroom with a view of Lake Galena, their full-service spa, award-winning dining, hot-air ballooning, boating, winter sleigh-rides, ice skating, skiing and sledding, and you have one fabulous place for a weddingmoon. For information about their wedding packages, call them at 800-240-1681.

Joliet

Located an hour southwest of Chicago, Joliet has two wedding venues we'd like to present to you, and they're both mansions.

Jacob Henry Mansion Estate

Built in 1876, the Jacob Henry Mansion is often considered to be the largest and best example of Renaissance Revival architecture still standing in the state of Illinois. The mansion took three years to build and consists of 40 rooms in over 16,800 square feet. But, the Mansion's not the only thing to get excited about when it comes to your wedding. The Jacob Henry Mansion Estate has three locations on the estate for your wedding: the Mansion itself, the Secret Garden, and the Old Central Church, which is connected to the Mansion by the Secret Garden.

If you opt for the Mansion, you can have your ceremony in the Drawing Room for up to 90 guests, or the outdoor courtyard for up to 140 guests. The Secret Garden is great for an outdoor wedding, with an outdoor tented ballroom which can accommodate 300 guests. But, the real draw is the Old Central Church, with its floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows, cathedral ceilings and 2,000 pipe organ. The Old Central Church can seat up to 500 guests.

Phone them at 815-722-1420 for more information.

Patrick C. Haley Mansion

Completed in the early 1890s, the Patrick C. Haley Mansion stands three and 1/2 stories, with massive front and back porches, stained-glass windows, intricate friezes and six fireplaces. For your wedding the Mansion offers a Victorian Garden with thousands of annuals and perennials, huge pine trees, two ponds, and a pergola between two waterfalls. Perfect for wedding photos! For indoor weddings, consider the Mansion's conservatory, which offers dancing under the starry skylight.

For receptions, the conservatory and ballroom will accommodate 450 guests for a plated reception and 600 guests for a cocktail reception.

St. Charles

Another popular tourist destination in Illinois is St. Charles, located in the scenic Fox River Valley, one hour west of Chicago. We have a couple ideas for you in St. Charles, one for a destination wedding, and another for your honeymoon.
