New Mexico Wedding Venues

New Mexico is known as the "land of enchantment," and, that it is. But, is it the "land of weddings?" Well, if it's not, it should be, as New Mexico offers those seeking unique destination wedding locations a vast array of "enchanted" wedding venues.

Couples seeking to get married in New Mexico will typically look at three areas:

  • Albuquerque
  • Santa Fe
  • Taos
Weddings in the Albuquerque Area

The official tourism website for Albuquerque says that the sun shines 310 days - perfect for planning a fabulous outdoor wedding! The weather is also one of the reasons Albuquerque is considered the "Ballooning Capital of the World," as Albuquerque hosts the world's largest hot air balloon festival each year in October, and also boasts more resident balloonists than any other state. What does that mean for you? A hot air balloon wedding, of course!

Imagine saying your "I Do's" in a hot air balloon soaring high above the majestic desert. What could be more romantic? Companies which offer private hot air balloon packages suitable for weddings include:

Skyspan Adventure

Wineries are also popular spots for many couples seeking romantic wedding spots in Albuquerque and the surrounding areas. Wait a minute, wineries in New Mexico? Absolutely! There's quite a thriving wine industry in New Mexico. You don't have to travel all the way to Napa Valley in California to have a winery wedding!

One winery in the Albuquerque area which offers wedding services is Casa Rondeña Winery, winner of the “Best Red in the Southwest” in the 2007 Southwest Wine Competition for their Meritage Red. For weddings, they offer both inside and outside sites which can accommodate 20 - 100 guests.

Weddings in the Santa Fe Area

The Santa Fe area is a popular tourist destination, not only because of the beauty of the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains, but also because of the abundance of galleries for art lovers. Here you can find art to please any tastes, from Native American art to Mexican folk art to contemporary American art. And the food! The southwest cuisine is reason enough to visit Santa Fe.

Many will agree that one of the top wedding spots in Santa Fe is the Loretto Chapel. In fact, it has consistently been named "the best place to get married" by the Santa Fe Reporter's "Best of Santa Fe." The Chapel was built in 1878, modeled after Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Couples will love the stained glass windows, which are over 150 years old, as well as the Italian gothic alter. But, what makes Loretto Chapel a draw for so many is that it is shrouded in mystery. There happens to be a mysterious staircase to the choir loft which makes two 360-degree turns and has no visible means of support. This design was very innovative for its time and is still perplexing experts today.

Loretto Chapel offers weddings from the simple to the more elaborate. Do check out the "Saint Chapelle" package which includes the minister, flowers, photography and a string quartet for $5,500. (2009 prices)

Weddings in the Taos Area

Taos is another New Mexico tourist destination, home to historic sites, great art museums, and enough outdoor activities to suit any outdoor enthusiast, with nearby hiking trails, whitewater rafting, several golf courses, and a ski resort. Taos is unique in that it is also home to Taos Pueblo, a living Native American community, in which the multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years.

One standout location for your Taos wedding is the Touchstone Inn, an historic adobe bed and breakfast located one mile from Taos Plaza, and situated with a great view of Taos Mountain, which is even better seen from their outdoor hot tub. Not only is this B&B a fine choice for your wedding, but you will definitely want to honeymoon here as well, enjoying the tranquility and views, and a massage outdoors next to the river.

You can have your wedding at Touchstone either indoors or outdoors on their grassy lawn. Receptions can be catered by their culinary staff, which prepares a variety of gourmet natural foods. If guests need a place to stay for your event, Touchstone and two adjoining inns can accommodate up to 20 to 50 people.
